Beschreibung:

Die Radierung wiederholt ein in Öl gemaltes Porträt von 1792. Graff war zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits ein berühmter und bei adeligen wie bürgerlichen Auftraggebern gefragter Porträtist. Der hier dargestellte Kauf-mann Detmar Basse (1764-1836), der Tuchgeschäfte in Frankfurt am Main und Paris gründete, wurde von Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1788 zum preußischen Hof- und Kommerzienrat ernannt. Basse war später in diplo-matischen Missionen tätig und wanderte später nach Amerika aus, wo er zahlreiche Industrie- und Agrarun-ternehmen aufbaute. Graff schuf insgesamt nur drei eigenhändige Radierungen. Dennoch war er mit dem Medium der Druck-graphik vertraut und setzte es gezielt ein, um seine Gemälde in Reproduktionen zu verbreiten und so seine Bekanntheit und seinen Kundenkreis zu erweitern. Eine enge Zusammenarbeit verband ihn mit dem Kupfer-stecher Johann Friedrich Bause, der viele seiner Porträts graphisch umsetzte. Wie geschickt Graff selbst aber mit der Radiernadel umzugehen wusste, beweist dieses Blatt. In freier Manier arbeitet er aus einem abstra-hierten Hintergrund die Figur des Kaufmanns mit nuancierten Licht- und Schattenpartien heraus.
